Berry phase from a quantum Zeno effect
We exhibit a specific implementation of the creation of geometrical phase through the state-space evolution generated by the dynamic quantum Zeno effect. That is, a system is guided through a closed loop in Hilbert space by means a sequence of closely spaced projections leading to a phase difference with respect to the original state. Our goal is the proposal of a specific experimental setup in...
متن کاملBerry-phase effect in anomalous thermoelectric transport.
We develop a theory of the Berry-phase effect in anomalous transport in ferromagnets driven by statistical forces such as the gradient of temperature or chemical potential. Here a charge Hall current arises from the Berry-phase correction to the orbital magnetization rather than from the anomalous velocity, which does not exist in the absence of a mechanical force. A finite-temperature formula ...
متن کاملBerry Phase and Supersymmetry
We study the constraints of supersymmetry on the non-Abelian holonomy given by U = P exp(i ∫ A), the path-ordered exponential of a connection A. For theories with four supercharges, we show that A satisfies the tt* equations if it is a function of chiral multiplets. In contrast, when A is a function of vector multiplets, it satisfies the Bogomolnyi monopole equations. We describe applications o...
متن کاملTopological Hall effect and Berry phase in magnetic nanostructures.
We discuss the anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas subject to a spatially varying magnetization. This topological Hall effect does not require any spin-orbit coupling and arises solely from Berry phase acquired by an electron moving in a smoothly varying magnetization. We propose an experiment with a structure containing 2D electrons or holes of diluted magnetic semiconducto...
متن کاملBerry phase and de Haas-van Alphen effect in LaRhIn5.
We explain the experimental data on the magnetization of LaRhIn5 recently published by Goodrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 026401 (2002)]]. We show that the magnetization of a small electron group associated with a band-contact line was detected in that Letter. These data provide the first observation of the Berry phase of electrons in metals via the de Haas-van Alphen effect.
